MP3 vs AAC

Sorry I haven't posted anything at all lately. There were some interesting thoughts going on my mind that I wanted to post, but I kept putting it off and off, and you know... I never really posted that, because I'm the epitome of procastination. In other words, I'm a slacker.

Yesterday I exchanged my Ipod nano 2Gb for a Ipod nano 4Gb. As soon as I open the package I'm informed by my cowoker that Apple release Ipod Video... What the fuck? So I go check the website; the cheapest one is a 30Gb for $299. That is just $49 more than my 4Gb Ipod Nano! Hello? 4Gb = $250, 30Gb = $299? Does that make sense? I mean they JUST realease Nano, how can they release something like that, it almost like they want to kill Ipod Nano. So I though, "Ok things aside, that thing must be a behemoth of a player, Ipod Nano would still be the sleek/small player." I'm wrong, Ipod video is only 1/2 times bigger than Ipod Nano. Really I don't know what to do. I don't want to exchange Ipod again, I don't think they would allow me to exchange it again. I'm trying to convince myself that the screen size on the Ipod video is small so watching video there would suck, which is true, but still a 30Gb music player a bit bigger than Ipod nano for only $49 more is still a killer deal.

So while working on some units, a customer left his Armin van Buuren - Universal Religion 2004 (Live from Armada, Ibiza) CD in the tray. Surely, I made a "backup" copy for myself. :P

Get back home, and I want to rip it to my Mp3 library. Here is the dilema. I don't know if I should start ripping with AAC or MP3. AAC is better, but for the sake of compatibility I still kept ripping in MP3 format. Also you can't really convert from MP3 to AAC. Well, you can, but the conversion from one lossy compression to lossy compresion, yields a very poor quality audio. Conversion to lossy compression has to be a lossless format, such as straight from the orignial CD. So I said fuck it and ripped the CD on AAC 192kbps (VBR). Now its not exactly 192kbps, because I set the variable bit rate on. Which is better, because it will auto adjust the kbps to whats needed. The resulst were that it bit rate were actually ranging from 199kbps to 203kbps, though I still get smaller file size when compared to MP3 192kbps (VBR).

So from this day forth, I shall rip all in AAC.

Behave kids.
